This class will focus on learning how words and music interact to create an effective song. Songwriting is a craft that requires an understanding of musical structure and a multitude of musical styles. This is best achieved by listening critically to rock music. We will study song form in general and then deconstruct specific songs to better understand what makes the song work.
We'll also trace the history of rock music chronologically as a source of inspiration and practical songwriting knowledge. Through listening to many musical examples we will study how rock grew from the blues, swing, and rhythm and blues of the 1930s and 1940s through the rock 'n' roll of the 1950s and up to the present day. In addition, the class will look at songs in the broader context as instruments of social change and awareness.
Through the listening lab, writing workshops, and group discussions, we will generate both the desire and ability to write our own songs. Each student will write and record a version of their song in our digital studio.

Unique to Quick Study is its Finding Focus Program for students with attention span disorders. Tutor Brenda Howald uses her background in the arts to build pattern recognition in a child, a skill essential to processing academic information. The student learns to sustain ever-longer sequences of movement, voice, and percussion in this approach, bringing his whole self into play. “Play” is the operative word in this technique that can be used as a break-out time that frames the homework of the day or can be woven into the subject matter itself.
Standard Tutoring at Quick Study includes: K-5 all subjects; Middle and High school – Reading for content, Writing, Spanish, Study Skills.
Program Three is English as a Second Language for adults or children. English Language Learners improve speaking skills through situation-based lessons, hearing and practicing the phrases for everyday activities: buying food at the store, counting and receiving change, taking a message on the telephone, etc.
Quick Study operates 12 months a year and operates out of Youngstown Cultural Arts Center Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:30-7:30 pm.
