Audio Engineering Society April Meeting
Theater
The performance of music, particularly electronic music, in multi-channel surround has been gaining (re-gaining?) popularity of late. Just as the role of the DJ has expanded to include laptop-jockeys composing and remixing on the fly, so has the traditional 2 channel stereo setup expanded into quad, 5.1 and beyond. At the same time, performing in surround presents as many new challenges as it does sonic possibilities. Long-time audio adventurer, author, guru and electronic music composer David Miles Huber has been on the front lines of these challenges, and through a series of demonstrations and an informal presentation, will begin to sketch a map of some of his findings from the frontiers of this nascent form.
Topics to include (time permitting):< /br> A quick historical look at surround sound music < /br>Surround music production < /br>Mixing in vs. out of the box < /br>Mastering for surround and delivery mediums < /br>Surround in live performance< /br>Speaker setup, location and calibration < /br>Low Frequency Effects vs. Bass Management issues< /br> Using Ableton Live for performance in surround < /br>How to get into surround performance < /br>And of course, your questions!
