Basic Recording I&II
Ages: 12-18
Instructor: Paul Rucker
Class Meets: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 - 5:00pm
from January 9th - March 8th
This lab-styled course will teach the basics of modern computer music
production using the tools employed by todays hottest producers. While
it is assumed that most students will be interested in producing hip-hop,
the tools and techniques taught in this class are equally suited to
producing R&B, rock, reggae, jazz, drum and bass, techno, polka, or
whatever else you want to make! This course will first teach students the
bare essentials of music theory and will then focus on how to use two
software packages: Ableton Live and Pro-Tools to be able to write, record,
and master songs. Students with no musical training are encouraged to
attend! All that is required is a love of music and the desire to produce
your own songs.
Topics covered will include: basic music theory, song structure, MIDI and
virtual instruments, drum programming, sound synthesis, working with
pre-made loops and sound libraries, vocal recording, editing, arranging,
effects plugins, mixing, mastering and more.
This is a five week course. Each class will begin with 20-minutes of
instruction, then students will work for the remainder of the class either
in the media lab or recording studio on their own projects or on simple
lab exercises to reinforce each weeks course material. The goal is for
each student to produce at least one demo song by the end of the course.
Enrollment is currently limited to 16 students. Students must maintain
attendance or their spot will go to a student on the waiting list.
