Lucy hails from metropolitan D.C. area, where she attended a Quaker high school that taught her the values of community and simplicity. She brings those values to Northeastern University in Boston, MA, where she is in her final year of the five-year co-op program. She intends to move to the West Coast after graduation and pursue work in the non-profit field.
Lucy’s past work internships and experiences taught her to combine her knowledge of communication studies and her philanthropic heart to pursue community engagement and outreach in order to strengthen relationships between non-profit organizations and the communities they serve. Her favorite experience is when she lived and worked in Rajasthan, India for six months with a Women Empowerment Organization, working on promotions and marketing for their organization and coordinating projects in an effort to enhance community mobilization and empowerment.
Where do you hope your studies and experience with community work will take you in the next 3 years?
Lucy hopes to make connections on the West Coast in order to possibly move to this side of the country after she graduates in May 2017. She would like to work in a position in which she can engage with under-served communities and be a liaison between the organization she is working at and the population she is working with. She is interested in working with organizations that have strong social justice initiatives and specifically would like to focus on justice and outreach for the LGBTQIA community.
Additional interests include working with study abroad organizations to facilitate effective cultural competency trainings for students traveling abroad, and promoting cultural sensitivity and awareness of global issues. Her passion and travels have inspired her to pursue work that helps people learn to adapt and appreciate new cultures.
